U-R-E is O-U-T: Hanley Wood buys Architecture and Architectural Lighting magazines as it readies for launch of Architect
By ArchNewsNow September 29, 2006 Hanley Wood, LLC, a business-to-business media and information company serving the housing and construction industries has purchased Architecture and Architectural Lighting from VNU Business Media, Inc. Architecture will immediately be merged into Hanley Wood’s newest launch, Architect, which debuts in October. Architect and Architectural Lighting will be part of the Commercial Design group.
There will be some editorial shifts and changes in both publications if for no other reason than geography. Hanley Wood is based in Washington, DC, and VNU offices are headquartered in New York City. “We’re working to ensure a smooth transition,” Architect’s editor-in-chief Ned Cramer told ArchNewsNow, “which includes conversations with staff at Architectural Lighting and Architecture about opportunities at Hanley Wood.” Also, according to Cramer, “The PA Awards will live on. The jury for this year’s PA Awards will be meeting as planned, next week, and the results of their deliberations will appear in the January 2007 issue of Architect.”
What will the new magazine be? “As the name suggests, Architect is about people, and their process,” said Cramer. “Our goal is to build community around issues of universal concern to the profession: technological change, social and environmental sustainability, business growth, practice management and, of course, design.”
Award-winning designer Abbott Miller of Pentagram is creating the magazine’s graphics. Hanley Wood will simultaneously launch www.architectonline.com, a parallel Web-based publication.
The purchase is part of Hanley Wood’s strategy to expand aggressively into the non-residential/commercial market.
